NSW State Cup 2011 Overview

The NSW State Cup has been run and won for 2011 in what can only be described as a heavy 10 track in racing terms. In other words gumboots were the choice of footwear.

With the Hornets boasting 5 teams for 2011 the conquest kicked off with the supermen of touch (Mens 30s) playing a ridiculous 9 games over the weekend with the highlight of the tournament coming in round two when Hills 1 ran into Hills 2. As the mud settled the younger, fitter and more enthusiastic Hills 2 took out bragging rights over the old crew. In the final wash up the 2 teams sat even on the ladder as they compared stories of the ones that got away.

The Mens B team were the big hope for the weekend but in the round of 16 the titanic hit the iceberg once again and left the players drowning their sorrows in the waters that scattered the fields. Captain Shep hasn't been seen since and may well have gone down with the ship. I'm sure the ark is already being designed for next years voyage for these lads.

The Womens B team had a pretty good weekend with a couple of wins from their 5 games but just missed out on a Sunday berth. What they left on the field was quickly made up for Saturday night as they partied hard into the night to celebrate a good year of results.

The Womens 30s were swimming against the tide before the ball was even tapped. Being the only team not based on the ocean may have cost these girls any chance of winning. It seems that the damp conditions didn't really suit the ladies from the hills but they battled on bravely and did us proud. Well done ladies.

The only ray of light for the weekend came when Ken Donley caught the ferry to Manly 45s and scored the winning touchdown against Penrith to secure the title. Congratulations Kenny for breaking through after many years of service with the Hills.

Another year gone for the Hornets but definitely one to remember. See you all next year.
